The jaguar is a sleek, stealthy beast. The 2028 Jaguar Type 01 is anything but.

At more than 17 feet long and 6.5 feet wide, it almost makes the Cybertruck look normal (almost, we said).

It certainly isn’t sleek and while it has the benefit of an EV’s quiet powertrain, it is far too big to be stealthy. At 5,950 pounds, this thing weighs more than many full-size pickup, although a lot of that heft is battery weight.

One thing it does have in common with its feline namesake is speed. Wildlife experts say a jaguar in its prime can sprint to 50 mpg in under 3 seconds in pursuit of a meal; Jaguar says the new Type 01 can hit 60 mph in 3.1 seconds. In pursuit of what isn’t specified, but we’d guess it would be a speeding ticket.

The all-electric Type 01 – pronounce it “zero-one,” Jaguar asks – boasts three electric motors with a combined output of 1,016 horsepower and 1,007 lb.-ft. of torque.

It is the first of a new line of Jags that, the company, has said, are intended to turn it from the renowned luxury and sports car it once was to a niche maker of super-luxury cars to compete with the likes of Bentley, Aston-Martin, the AMG-Maybach from Mercedes and, in a nod to that sporty heritage of yore, the Porsche Taycan.

Whether its intended audience – largely America – will still be in love with trucks and cars that are as big as trucks by them remains to be seen; right now, the prospects aren’t great. But then, as a niche player, JLR (Jaguar’s owner, formerly Jaguar Land Rover) won’t be depending on Tesla-scale sales to make a go of it.

Jaguar Type 01 Concepts
Here’s what the concept that Jaguar showed in 2024 looked like./JLR Ltd.

The four-door, four-seat (yup, only room for four) Jaguar Type 01 will start at about $130,000, and Jaguar has said that some future models will approach the $350,000 mark. Sales are slated to open early in 2027 with customer deliveries starting in the middle of the year.

Ironically, given Jaguar’s roots in England, a reviewer for the Guardian newspaper says it is too big for English parking spaces or for easy maneuverability in city traffic there and that the target customer seems to be “rich tech industry buyers driving the wide open roads of America.”

We weren’t invited to the launch so we’ve not seen the car in person, but from its photos we can say that the production model unveiled earlier this week in New York looks a lot like the concept that was shown in late 2024 to lots of derision. It is definitely a design that you’ll either love or hate.

Jaguar says the Type 01 has a 118 kwH battery that’s good for 400 miles with 21-inch wheels and tires – but the model at the unveiling was shod with 23″ rubber, so figure maybe 320 miles for that one. We’re not sure how it would look with the smaller wheels and tires, as the 23-inchers look just right.

The Type 01, by the way, is just 55 inches tall – about the same as the Porsche Taycan GT (54.3 inches), which is a foot shorter, two inches narrower and has approximately the same power. The Porsche is a full second quicker to 60 but it costs almost twice as much as the new Jag.

We’ll let the photos that Jaguar has released tell the rest of the story.
