- Qualifies for Federal Clean Vehicle Tax Credit for Buyers
- Performance Powertrain
- Mid-segment Range
Genesis latest EV, the SUV-styled Electrified GV70 crossover, has started arriving at dealerships from the company’s U.S. assembly plant in Alabama.
That makes it the first of Genesis three EVs to qualify for federal tax credit eligibility under new rules requiring final assembly be done in North America.
Electrified GV70 buyers can qualify for an income tax credit of up to up to $7,500 – at least until the IRS releases the rules for EV makers to meet battery component requirements set down in the same new rules, part of the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022.
The agency is expected to finalize the battery rules early this spring.
Meantime, the 2023 Electrified GV70:
It is an all-electric, compact luxury crossover derived from regular GV70. It shares the internal combustion model’s sleek lines as well as its two-row, five-seat interior, but has slightly different front and rear fascia.
The name is cumbersome, but its seems to be Genesis’ practice to add “Electrified” to the model name when there’s already a gasoline version – as in the Electrified G80 sport sedan. The company’s other EV, the GV60, doesn’t have a gasoline counterpart so doesn’t get an adjective as part of its name.
What’s it Cost?
Pricing for the 2023 Electrified GV70 starts at $66,975 for the Advanced trim, including Genesis’ mandatory $1,125 destination fee. The Prestige trim starts at $73,775.
Both have dual-motor, all-wheel drive powertrains capable of delivering 429 peak horsepower and 516 pound-feet of peak torque. An available boost mode gives a short burst of up to 483 hp, but will diminish range.
It’s the same system as in the GV60 Performance trim.
How Far Will Electrified GV70 Go?
Range is estimated at up to 236 miles, which is a few miles more than offered by the new Lexus RZ 450e (220 miles), Mercedes Benz EQB 350 (227 mi.) and Volvo XC40 Recharge (223 mi.) )small luxury electric crossovers, but less than many other likely competitors including the GV60 Advance (248 miles), Audi Q4 e-tron (265 mi.) or Tesla Model Y Performance (303 mi.).
The Electrified GV 70 uses a 77.4 kWh battery pack and the 400/800 dual voltage super-fast charging system that’s been on parent Hyundai Group’s EVs since the launch of the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5.
How Fast Will it Charge?
That means that on a 350 kW DC fast charger, an Electrified GV70 with a 90% depleted battery can recharge to 80% of capacity in just 18 minutes. The same recharging session would take more than an hour on a 50 kW DC fast-charger.
Overnight home charging on a Level 2 (240-volt) system should take about 7.5 hours if starting with a fully depleted battery – less if there’s still some charge when it is plugged in.
Designers managed to pack the Electrified GV70’s batteries and rear motor into spaces that don’t interfere with cabin or cargo room, so interior measurements are almost the same as in the gas model, including a hefty 28.7 cubic feet of storage behind the rear seats and 56.9 cu. ft. with the 60/40 split rear seats folded down.
The electric GV70 also can tow the same as the gas model – 3,500 pounds – although towing is a big drain on the battery.
Electrified GV70 Features
The Advanced trim comes with electronic suspension, 20-inch alloys, a panoramic sunroof, hands-free power liftgate, LED headlights and taillights, leather upholstery with woven wool inserts, power adjustable front seats, heated and ventilated front seats, ambient lighting, wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless phone charger, 8-speaker audio and a 14.5-inch infotainment touchscreen with voice recognition, navigation and over-the-air updates.
The Prestige adds luxury goodies such as nappa leather upholstery, a 12.3-inch 3-D digital gauge cluster, a head-up display, heated steering wheel and heated rear seats, and a premium 16-speaker Lexicon audio system.
In addition to the regular eco-normal-sport driving modes, the Electrified GV70 has an “e-Terrain” mode that lets the driver select from sand, snow and mud settings for improved traction and handling in those various conditions.
Safety Stuff
Standard safety features include forward collision-avoidance, lane keeping and following assist, blind-spot monitor and collision avoidance, rear cross-traffic collision avoidance, highway driving assist, adaptive cruise control with full stop and go capability, driver attention warning, high beam assist, a surround view monitor, parking distance warning and parking collision-avoidance assist, reverse remote smart parking assist and safe exit assist.
The Electrified GV70 hasn’t been crash teted by either the National Highway Traffic Safety administration or the nonprofit Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. But its platform-mate, the internal combustion GV70, aced all of the IIHS crash tests and safety systems evaluations and earned the institute’s Top Safety Pick + designation. That’s a strong indication that the electric model should do well when it is tested.
