The state of New York joins a dozen other states this year in offering cash plug-in-vehicle purchase incentives.

A state program approved last year is now slated to become operational in April, offering buyers of new plug-in hybrid and battery-electric vehicles rebates of up to $2,000.
The New York rebate program also would provide the rebate top purchasers of hydrogen fuel-cell electric cars if and when any are offered for sale in the state. To date, the only fuel-cell electric cars in the market are available only in California, where almost all of the nation’s public hydrogen fueling stations are concentrated.
Of the states with financial incentives for purchasers of plug-in and fuel-cell electric vehicles, eight offer rebates and five provide tax credits that can be claimed at the end of the year in which the vehicle is acquired.
Additionally, the federal government provides an income tax credit of up to $7,500 for PEV purchases. Check our PEV Incentives article for more information.
For information on individual state programs – they vary widely and include things such as incentives to help with the purchase of home charging systems, sales tax and registration discounts or forgiveness, free parking and HOV lane access – check the state incentives listings maintained by the National Conference of State Legislatures, the Plug In America advocacy group’s interactive map of state incentives or Plugless Power’s 2017 incentives program update site.
A caveat: None of the info sites are 100% accurate and up to date. That’s because state programs depend on the whims of the legislatures. Many expire at the end of each year and have to be renewed, others run out of funding before their expiration dates, some are dropped when the political makeup of a legislature changes. So if you don’t see your state listed, it is still worth your while to check on-line or call your local utility to see if there might be a program for you.
